In fact it's totally rust free.

Probably the best and most reliable car i have ever had in 50 years of driving, which includes many much newer cars.
Purchased 4.5 years ago for what was a bit above the market rate but never looked back.

Well that's the kiss of death. !!!!!!!
You've got the 2.4 which from a reliability perspective is the best buy - 5-cylinder bomb proof Volvo engine and no turbo charger and associated vacuum operated control systems.... That will go on forever.

I can't comment on Ford as the most recent example that I have owned was a 1961 105E Anglia which by now will almost certainly have departed for the big scrapyard in the sky.

I do know that Volvos last well, but ultimately even good Swedish steel will eventually rust. My '87 745, which I had owned for 18 years when, in 2016, it finally succumbed to terminal corrosion, being a good example. The least good Volvo was a very early '75 (N) 244, on which the tops of both front wings perforated at 12 years old - this was before wheel arch liners became standard fitment.

It is easy to 'knock' cars today, but it is also important to remember just how far we have come in corrosion prevention. The very worst examples are infinitely better than what was accepted as 'normal' even 40 years ago. Two quick examples:
- An '82 Maxi in champagne beige (the last year of production) that we bought at 6 months old required a bottom half respray at 18 months old, and
- A '78 Mini which I bought new (and paid extra for a full anti-corrosion treatment) rotted out both front wings before it was five years old.

Another car that really did rot out before your very eyes was the late '50s Vauxhall Victor - a neighbour's had more holes in it than a string vest before it was even a year old. We have come a very long way since those days - it may help to remember that!

Regards, John.

Well, they do say Volvo drivers don't know what a mirror is for ...

Here, rust has become something you just don't see on anything made properly since about 1995 (I say "made properly" to cover rusty Landrover Discoveries - it was a poor construction decision not to paint the firewall of a vehicle that's likely to be wading, my mate's Disco II rusted before he ever took it offroad & was fixed under the 3yr warranty).

But it wasn't uncommon to see cars made in the 70's, regardless of where they came from, with rust bubbles by the time they were 2 years old. I can't imagine what it'd have been like where they salt the roads, did the 1yr manufacturer warranty cover rust?

My 2008 is superb, and its already outlived the average Ford my nearly a year. Goodmpaint, tight shut lines, no squeaks or rattles after 14 years. I'm not sure most people even know what they they mean when they use the word "quality", but its clear the general standard of finish is very good.

My FiL tells me his first proper job was sprucing up new cars and disguising signs of rust so they could leave the showroom and go to their new owners! A 3 month anti corrosion warranty was normal in the 60s and 70s, he says.

The word "quality" is my 850, my old 940 2.3HPT, My old P2 Euro3 D5 Manual with 235k on the clock. Even the box sections had started to go on the P3 V70. Lovely car to drive, with the factory Polestar map, the performance was effortless

Negative rot on my P3, and it's one of the oldest ones out there.

My 850 back home rotted through the front wings - I'm afraid the word "quality" was out to lunch on mine. Not had a car do that since my Camaro in the 70's.

I think there is an obvious lessen here for everyones differing experiences of different models, but people seem unwilling to admit it...

99% of 850s go on the front wings, thankfully mine must be the 1%, 850s dont suffer with rot in general elsewhere though.

Isopod, Under seal, News of the World/The Sun/The Sunday People, mesh and a Feu Orange Air Freshener was a stick feature in 60’s and 70’s cars. Cars now are way better than they used to be in many levels. However, manufacturers don’t want em to be immortal either. It’s rare to see rusty cars now but fir whatever reasons they pop up from time to time too. My 02 S60 started to rot at 10yrs old so it’s not uncommon on Volvo. I’ve seen V60’s rusting which I would of thought unusual

I remember my father buying a secondhand Austin A35 van in the mid '60's from a reputable local garage. It was immaculate when purchased but 12 months later the sills were falling apart. They had been repaired with a row of baked bean tins lying along the bottom of the sills, covered in wet newspaper and body filler on top of that.
