Default 850 tdi ecu swap? Remap?

I have an 1996 volvo 850 tdi.

I'm enquiring about potentially remapping it. The mapper asked me to take my ecu apart and send some pics of the the inside so he can see the chips. Obviously I'd rather not do this as I've never even unplugged an ecu

Are the ecu's coded to each car? In other words can I simply plug in another msa15.7 ecu and run it or will i need to mess about swapping keys and what not????

was thinking of simply buying a spare 850 tdi ecu for him to play with and see if he can write to it and then fitt it to my car.

Getting a spare ECU sounds a sensible way to go about it. If it all goes horribly wrong then you still have a good original unit.

If you haven't already done so, posts by Martin R Smith on this forum are worth reading since he has considerable experience in this area.

Got the spare ecu back today from the mapper local to me. He managed to solder 2 sockets in the ecu and then map it.

Fitted the ecu and its made a massive difference. Also seems to feel smoother. it used to be a bit rough as the revs dropped but its perfectly smooth now. Very happy with the outcome.
