Default Fuel Pressure Control Valve Error

Hi Everyone,

Pulling out of a street yesterday, as I accelerated, the "Engine Service Required Urgent " message came up. The car then went into limp mode and I chugged back home.

I then turned the engine back on with the iCarsoft i906 connected and read the codes :-

ECM - 2800 Fuel Pressure Control Valve

There were other codes :- pressure too high, pressure too low.

My question is, can anyone point me to the place where this valve is?. I'm not that familiar with diesel engines and although I've got a picture of it in the Haynes manual, I still don't have a clue where it's situated. The car is not starting at all now.

Also, could the fact that I've not changed the fuel filter for 2 years have any bearing on it. (15,000mls).

I took a picture of where I think it might be.

That big valve under the pump with the wire is the control valve... is that lower wire loose in it's housing? there is a white sleeve showing, see if you can pull it out ...

The icarsoft is an excellent device , reasonable price and packed with features , have you updated the software recently?

Thanks Clan, I thought that was it, but the picture in the Haynes manual looks different. I'll check that connector wiring, yes it does seem loose.

I bought the icarsoft in May 2019 when I got the car. It's save'd me over £1000 on garage fees. But no I haven't updated the software, I'll look into it.

Just pulled the connector off now and tried to reseat the wires. Plugged back in and it started first time. It may require a more permanent fix than just pushing the wires back in, but at least I know it's nothing more.

And there I was, thinking of taking it to the garage. Brilliant.

Thanks again.

PS looks like the iCarsoft and this forum has saved me some more money.

you need to buy a repair terminal from volvo , the locking tag must have broken , it will let you down again very soon with all the diesel vibration .

could you not push the terminal all the way back in and put some hot glue or similar in the back side.. that would probably stop it rattling loose again

or a judiciously placed cable tie

seems to me the angle of the main lead from the loom (flex conduit) is what is pulling it back in that direction so try and give it some more slack

That is a bodge in my eye and will lead to future problems , the terminal will already be worn by the constant movement of the terminal against the pin when the engine is running . The only "fix" is to use the volvo repair terminal which comes already crimped properly on a 6 inch piece of correctly sized cable . It would indeed be a good idea to move the loom somehow to reduce the stress on the plug 👍

Well I suppose if you do use the replacement part you can just decide where to cut the old cables therefore allowing an inch or so extra

I was writing a reply when you two beat me to it.

I did think about using cable ties, one round the conduit and one round the connector, and 2 more to pull the conduit up to the connector.

It guess it depends if you want a permanent solution or one that is good enough. Of course, even using cable ties does allow for a small movement of the pins which could lead to arcing, whereas with a new connector + pins, there is no movement. It could do with some sort of cable restraint though.

I didn't know that a repair kit came with cables already crimped, that would mean you have to join the cables. I assumed that you just bought the connector with pins, re-crimp them, and push the new pins into the connector.

I phone Volvo parts to see if I could get a repair kit. They phoned me back later saying that they couldn't find one.

I think that I can get the connector though.
