A few years ago I did get some V70 reflectors metallised in Eastern Europe and kept almost all of them for my own use. Transport costs were significant.

I recently took a refinished headlight back off my daily driver and the reflector looked as good as it did when I fitted it.

I have been setting aside old headlights and I could do another batch (probably got about another 12). If anyone is interested, please get in touch.

When you get into it you need to check your
glass/lens (chips/cracks/flecks/brand)
adjusting motors
clips
foam strips
brass mounting fittings (can get cross threaded, or twisted out)
mounting bolts (heads and threads can get messed up)
reflector mounting and pivot points (can snap off)
bulb holders (sidelight holder tends to deteriorate with age)
transport/postage costs

That's a generous offer, Steve, one in which I would be interested - subject to cost, of course.

I'm not sure about all the checks that you list as I presented my garage with the replacement light unit and asked them to fit it. I don't think that they encountered any problems - certainly nothing was said - and the labour charge was minimal.

But you've got me thinking! Is this perhaps a service that the club could provide for it's members? I don't know if there are formal arrangements in place for this sort of thing, or if they are done on an ad hoc basis; perhaps an officer of the club could comment on possibilities?

It is good that private members such as yourself are willing to help other members in this way, but discounts might be available to organisations such as ours that are unavailable to individuals.

Regards, John.

Got mine from PFS for a reasonable price but they only seem to have the left side now

They still list the 'upgraded' projector style though. Mind you a little pricey...

Can get them easily enough from euro car parts at a fairly reasonable price for aftermarket. I’ve recently fitted a pair. Was amazed at how bad the old ones had got given the much brighter view. Not as good as the original hella ones in terms of overall quality or beam pattern but certainly do the job. I might try putting the original lenses on the new units when I get a moment.

Steve,

I bought a 2008 C70 a couple of months ago, and quickly realised that the dimmed headlamps were totally hopeless. (Of course I tested that they were working when I bought it, but not at night; I mean, who buys a car at night...!?) Anyway, I have today managed to get the headlamps out, and inevitably there was almost no chrome left on the reflectors above the bulb.

So I tried sanding them down, applying a primer and then using chrome spraypaint from Halfords; no joy: very smooth finish, but too matte - not "shiny" enough. Next option: bought shiny silver reflective tape and tried as well as I could to cover the inside of the reflector with it. Not completely smooth, but much shinier. Just went out at night, and although (I think) there is an improvement, it's still pretty marginal.

So my question is: should I fork out for "150%+" Philips/Osram bulbs? Will they make any difference? Or maybe you might be able to supply me a re-metallised version?

I have to say that I'm not sure what all the "checks" you need me to do are: all I can say is that I've managed to get the reflector unit out, separate it from bulbs, play with it and put it and back in again: so presumably if yours are just like mine, they should fit straight in...?

Any advice you (or anyone else!) can give would be really helpful....

Thanks in advance,

N.

Hi Nucktheking

2008 headlights are very different so I can't really help I'm afraid.

This bit of the forum is for early V70 and C70s up to 2005. C70 headlights changed at that point.

PS

Since you have already tried spraying, can you try a different spray that is more like chrome ie more shiny? (I haven't done that myself but some spray cans look shiny at least on the cap of the can).

Don't know about upgrading the bulbs but getting a shiny reflector will make a big difference.
