Thanks again for your posts. Spent the day checking and rechecking every plug and connection, no luck. One of the first diagnosis was a faulty lift pump so i had a new one fitted. I've just sat in the car in a moment of silence and contemplation and noticed that when i turn the ignition on i can here the lift pump and fuel moving, draining. But it doesnt run for a couple of seconds to pressurize the fuel system. It seems to be running for 25 to 30 seconds before it shuts of. Any ideas on this?

On an euro3 engine the liftpump only works briefly prestarting like you described
The highpressurepump also has a mechanical lowpressurepump

-Do yourself a favor and measure the compression there are cheap compressionmeters availible ,because that can reveal recondition/timing faults of the cilinderhead without compression the engine will not start and will not trip faults in the ecu

My 2005 D5 has a hum from the rear as soon as I switch on, it keeps going. I will check the other car when it comes home.

On euro 4 engines it stays on because the euro4 highpressurepump has no mechanical low pressurepump

I've had the compression checked and it's all good. The cambelt and camshaft timing is spot on to. Surely the lift pump shouldn't run for this long?

Mine is euro 3 so therefore I assume the pump should only run for a couple of seconds.

It should be longer than just a few seconds
it also switches on with accellaration and when the tank is half empty its being used to pump from the left sadle to the right sadle of the tank

if the liftpump is too weak or not comming on then filling the tank full will help to start but it will be needed for accelleration too
But first get it to start with a full tank

Did you also check the camshaft position sensor? this is being used to time the injection if its broken/not connected the injectors will not get their opening signals

Most likelly
And if the tank is less than halffull it keeps humming if the tank is full it will only shortly run
