Engine will not run
I have a 2003 v70 d5 auto. The cambelt went. have had the head done and replaced with new cambelt etc. It wouldn't run. I have had the timing triple checked, injectors and pump tested, and the engine has good compression. Replaced the lift pump in the tank and had the ecu checked and tested, and wiring. All are ok. At my witts end now has anyone got any ideas.
Cheers Tom |

on these early ones the pump timing can be a bit of a dark art,you may think it all lines up but it's not that straight forward.
how are you setting things up? |

you dont time a pump on a common rail engine it can go anywhere .. it is just a pressure pump .. Cam timing can be a dark art too ;-)

If you have had the head apart how have you done the belt timing?
Double check all the electrical plugs are in, easy to leave one out. Have you got the pipes to the common rail manifold and pump the right way round? DDN

Thanks for your replies. I had the head fully recondition. I have had the car sent to my local diesel specialist. They have checked all the timing is correct and tested both the pump and the injectors. All ok. They are stumped too. They even put the pump in a d5 xc90 they had there and it fired up no problem. All connectors and wiring all in right. Then it went to my local volvo agent to get the ecu checked and again everything fine but she still wont run. I can get it to run on easy start even though it pains me to do so. I came on here as a last chance saloon to see if anyone had any ideas. It was a lovely car before it went bang. I've spent a lot of money trying to get it to run again and I'm starting to get to the end of my tether with it. Any ideas no matter how crazy or obscure would be gratefully accepted.

Have you bleed one of the injectors? Could just be that the common rail is full of air perhaps?
If you just slacken off one injector pipe while its cranking do you get diesel at that point? John |

Common rail is self bleeding and high pressure pipes must NEVER be undone due to the 20,000 + ( twenty thousand ) psi pressure which can pierce the skin !

Tom where are you introducing the easy start to get it to run?
And are you saying that once its starts it goes ok? Another thing who did the head recon? DDN

In cases like this its just a matter of checking all things that are needed to run an engine all over again
But make a list in advance with EVERYTHING on it not just what you had disconnected. Because of some rare non correlated faults wich can intefere and you are assuming working because you didnt disconnected them -Meassure compression in the glowplug holes (if valve timing is wrong or the head is leaking badly you will know where to look for after the reconditioning -Check every fuse -Check the big ecu connectors -Measure every connector sensor on resistance voltage with a reference sheet -The railpressure regulator is an important one! If that one is failing the engine wont start even with a good pump! -Check pre fuel pressure of the intank pump |
