Do I buy a second generation XC90
I am now strongly considering a second generation XC90 to replace the ageing 1st generation XC90 we have. We have two large dogs (Rhodesian Ridgebacks) and two teenagers. We were considering a VW Transporter T6 but there is nothing 'luxury' about it and although it would have room to spare for luggage, people and dogs on holidays, it would still only be a van. So, does anyone else have large dogs that ride in their new xc90 with no issues? Is anyone able to give me a cm measurement from the where the boot is shut into the cabin up to rear of the second row seats please? Our dogs are about 70cm tall to their shoulders so height is also of concern. Any help, comments and advice greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I won’t mess about, frankly it was better in all respects, performance, consumption, ride comfort etc etc. HOWEVER, while mine feels like a luxury off road utility type vehicle this felt very much more like a jacked up car and I passed on it. I was offered a good deal to get it however I just felt more comfortable in my current car and having the cash then stumping up for a new one. They do hold their value very well. My only advice is to get pilot assist 2nd generation. The 1st gen works to 30mph (i.e. don’t bother!). 2nd gen works to 80mph and really is fantastic! |

I had a very large Old English Sheepdog and there was more than enough space in the cargo area, the MK1 XC90 has 4" wider floor area, and the new XC90 loses a bit of headspace at the rear due to the rake of the tailgate but it is still a massive cargo area, bigger than most large SUV's, the floor area is approx 44" wide and approx 48" long with mid row seats in place. It is about 42" from top of rear seat to the tailgate. Not as big as the MK1 cargo are but still big. I would advise going to a dealership and checking out the new XC90 to see if it suits your needs.

3rd row folded down, the MK1 is 48" wide, the MK2 is 44" wide at the floor, wider higher up.
I used to be able to get standard 48" boards in my MK1 but my MK2 is 4" narrower. (Internal floor width))

I have 1 Ridgeback and there is certainly no room for 2 of them if you travel long distances. They would not be able to lie down comfortably. Maybe a trailer would bring a solution.

I have a mk 1 ( 2011/61 D5 Exec 42k miles..) with a Trans K9 dog cage in the back for our 2 GSD's. They fit great.
I ve just bought at new mk2 - the same box its so all is good. The dogs have more than enough room to move sit etc - there is an updated box that has greater headroom ( c 3") so that may be the way to go for the op if your concerned with height. Plus there is no split fold tailgate which means no banging of paws when jumping in. Oh and the mk2 boot floor is at least 10cm lower as well so not as high for dogs to jump when getting older. |

I have recently sold my MK2, I’ve got 3 Weimaraner and they fitted comfortably in the boot. I used at made to measure Hatchbag to protect the boot and had a full set of Volvo guards fitted, backseat, divider and 2 tailgate doors. I modified some of the fittings to maximise the space and divide the back up 60/40 so had 2 dogs one side and one the other.
When I sold the car and removed everything after 5 year the back was still like new, was a great setup. I will be putting the parts up for sale when my new car arrives so someone will pick up a bargain. |

once they settle down they both snuggle quite nicely but I would not go more than an hour without a stop for them.
