Be careful, there are two wires in one of the amp/stereo plugs that are for the headlights. You will need to join them back up to get the headlights working. I had this problem with 50 shades when fitting an aftermarket stereo and found the headlights no longer worked, I can't remember exactly which wires or plug though as it was about a year ago now.

I'll try trial and error with the amp speaker wires, I'll get there in the end.

Yes my dashboard has single DIN, so that's at least one relief
What a bummer! I suspect that was for the earlier 760 that was essentially a 740 inside and had a different head unit. If memory serves there were two different patch leads available, one for the extra amp version and one without. Not interchangeable either!

Which reminds me, they did similar on the 940 that Luke refers to and on one of the Autoleads patch leads, if it wasn't the right one for the car it needed the extra link for the headlights. However all audio etc functions worked, the lighting seemed to be an oversight. I used an Autoleads lead on my last 740GLE (also 1988) and that was literally plug'n'play and didn't interfere with the lights at all.

It doesn't help that Volvo changed the wiring quicker than most of us change our underwear! Bookmark this link if it turns out to have the correct wiring diagram for the radio, the rest is fairly accurate but i've not checked the radio wiring :

http://www.networksvolvoniacs.org/im...o_760_1988.pdf

I've downloaded it so i can use it without having to search t'internet, took a while to find it online!

PS - it's primarily for USA spec cars so some things may be different on yours!

Just finished it over my lunch break...all sorted. Bought a used Sony head unit, do you know what, it sounds incredible, all for the all-in cost including fittings of £14!

Good to hear you're all sorted now, it's surprising how much difference a modern head unit makes! Volvos speakers weren't too bad as far as OE fit goes, i've seen worse (but also better) and tend to last a bit longer than many competitors OE fit speakers.

They can be replaced with 130mm speakers but it's advisable to use a bespke speaker mounting ring for them.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/324541107136

There was a UK listing for them but can't seem to find it lately. Volvo didn't use the "one hole in each corner of a square" approach, instead using a rectangle as the plan for the corners.

You did better than me on cost, my used JVC plus handsfree mic (lost by the previous owner of the head unit) and other bits came to ~£41 but either way i'm happy with mine - just need to rig up steering wheel remote controls now!

Just fitted it with the cage, nothing special. If you have a 7/940 you need the fascia panel linked to further up, the facelift 760s from 88 on had DIN slots so makes life easier/neater
