Thanks for the ideas!

It's definitely my car since I've also smelled the sulphur in the countryside and forest roads where I'm the only car in miles.

It could still be the environment.

Kind of update but no actual update. I'm out of ideas so I will just write all my thoughts and observations on this topic. Sorry for the bad English, it's not my first language.

The stench is still there. Comes and goes. Can confirm 100% that it is not the environment. It doesn't seem to come from the vents since one time the smell occurred I turned up the blower and directed it to my face - got nice, fresh air, no smell.
Went outside had a sniff of exhaust gasses - no unusual aromas there.

I think that there is a small regularity with the smell - it occurs after I drive on the highway for about 20-25 minutes (95 kmph) and enter low speed zone (55 kmph). But the smell has also occurred in city driving and in idle while parking. For example today it was -22C and after starting the car, letting it idle for about 15 minutes and entering the vehicle I was greeted with the smell again.

The alternator belt snapped the other day, fortunately a clean snap - no further issues. Don't know if it is related to the smell issue but maybe? The belt was last changed in January with the clutch. Had new belt installed but no changes with the smell. I'm starting to think that the battery might be at its end of life? Car didn't start in the first try today since it was something like -22 C outside. But charged the battery and tested it with vida - it shows that it's okay and passed that test. On visual inspection, the battery looks fine.

Alternator belt shouldn't snap that quick, does alt pulley spin freely, maybe bearings starting to seize? Or on overload all the time due to dying battery, and overcharging battery can lead to smell (sulphur). Have you got access to another battery to try?

EDIT: Do AGM batteries smell of Sulphur,? I assume you have an AGM as its 'stop / start'.?

Guys at the workshop who replaced the belt and clutch in January and also now checked all the pulleys and said all looked and felt fine. It could have been just bad luck and belt got damaged by some debris or it was just defective from the beginning.

I do have AGM battery but not stop/start. Quick googling reveals that AGM battery can emit sulphuric smell so it seems that changing the battery might be my next move even if it's not the culprit, it wouldn't hurt.

Friend of mine at Brixxs had the same issue. He said the mats of the car produced the smell for his car.

Default bad smell

I once had this same problem and it turned out to be the battery, plates had dried out and been topped up before I bought the car, a new battery sorted the problem , good luck

Have you checked the battery breather pipe is fitted correctly , is not blocked and is exiting the bottom of the car. Also check that a blanking plug is fitted in second vent hole in the other end of battery. The battery breather pipes are often overlooked by so called fitters. The gas is dangerous and can cause respiratory problems so worth checking.
AGM batteries are no different to normal wet lead acid batteries in that respect as they both emit Sulphur dioxide fumes when charging hence both have breather pipe sockets at both ends of casing to allow for various fittings.
If battery is being over charged then smell will be stronger and will eventually be damaged and fail.

Replaced the battery few weeks ago and the smell hasn't come back.
Thank you everybody for your input!
