S40: - 2002 1.9D 115HP Timing Belt

Hi Folks,

I have not been able to get a Haines manual for my 1.9D S40 and I would really like some info before I attempt to change the timing belt and water pump.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Also get a tensioner kit as well, change the belt, waterpump and tensioners together.

Hi,
sorry for reactivating this old thread, but I am having trouble with the timing belt on my dad's V40.

I installed a complete timing belt kit including water pump and tensioner, the manual from gatos helped me out a lot during the process.

But I dont have the special tool for checking the belt tension, does someone know a trick how to do that without the tool? I just guessed the tension based on my experience with other engines (mainly VW 1.9 TDI), but now the engine makes a "wiwiwiwiwi" sound on idle. If I rev up the engine only the tiniest amount it goes away, no belt-whining etc.

The old timingbelt was really lose, I could lift it 2-3cm between the cam gears. But it was already over 12 years / 100000km old. Does someone know how much slack the belt is supposed to have?

It used to be that a 90 degree twist should be just about possible with finger strength on the longest stretch between pulleys, as a general guide. And indeed, I've read that in Haynes manuals.

A "wiwiwi" noise on tickover sounds more like a chipped valve, from your description. I would ignore it unless you're planning a major engine overhaul at some point in the near future.

Thanks for your reply, I tried to twist the belt 90° after tightening it (this is also common on old 8V VW gas engines), but it seems like there is no part of the belt that is long enough to do so.

I don't think that its a chipped valve, the noise clearly only started after the timing belt replacement and the engine is running perfectly.

Anyway, it seems like it just needed some time to settle in, after the first 500km the noise was gone

The car has already done 2000km since I did the timing belt and is running stronger than ever without any weird sounds
