Default CV Joint

Classic V70 T5 (2000 W Reg 175,000 miles)

I think my nearside CV Joint is knackered. At low speeds with greater than half lock i get a horrible clunking sound. This is more pronounced when pulling out of cambered junctions, presumably because the suspension is being compressed/extended putting the cv joint at a more acute angle.

Before I dive in and part with cash, my questions are;

1) Do you think my assumptions are correct? If not what else could be at fault?
2) What is the likely cost of parts, and where would you recommend buying from. Can I get good pattern parts or is genuine the only way to go?
3) Can I keep using the car for the rest of the week (Or at least till new parts are sourced), or will this cause damage/wear to other parts such as driveshaft and bearings?
4) Given the mileage, should I change the offside one as well while I'm at it?

If you have any other suggestions, your advice will be much appreciated.

Cheers
Jim

Jim,

I think you're probably right, it does sound like the CV joint. I would be tempted to jack up that side and see if you can feel any play or roughness in the joint before you start taking it apart.

Don't bother with Volvo OEM as I think they only sell the complete drive shaft ££££! Try Nordic or GSF for replacement joint (around £70 I think). I wouldn't go to the trouble of replacing the other side until it goes, unless you're worried about it.

You will probably have a great deal of fun splitting the joint from the hub. Be prepared to separate the whole hub carrier from the steering/suspension and taking to garage/dealer with a press to get apart. The last one I did took a Volvo main agent 1 hour to split the joint from the hub (and that was with everything already dismantled for them!). I am informed by one Volvo dealer that they either come apart easily or they are a bug*er! In my experience it's only another 4 bolts/fixings and a whole lot easier to work on with the units on the bench than struggling in the wheel arch.

Managed to strip it down no problems, but then it all went pear shaped.
