Keyless key
The current keyless Volvos have a small plastic 'key' that remains in the ignition switch at all times. However according to the manual its removable.
Could anyone confirm if it contains any electronic components or is it just simply a blank peice of plastic? I assume the car/imobiliser senses the key in your posseision and allows you to start it? My wish is to obtain one, fit it to my standard 'keyed' entry car in the hope the imobiliser will pick up my standard key in my pocket and still allow me to start the car without having to use the clumsy large standard key that I cant add any other keys or keyrings to as it rattles on the dashboard! I went to Volvo today (Basingstoke) and they seemed to understand what I was on about, but quoted £150 (for 2 parts) that were supposedly this item. Also, if someone has this option, could you get me a part number for the plastic 'key', that way I can see if they were getting it wrong like I suspect they were.

Your standard key is completely different and has to be in the ignition switch before its coded signal is picked up by the aerial in the switch ... so no it wont work

Surely that depends on the range of the 'aerial' that detects the key?
Or are you speaking from experience?

There is no range for the standard key , when it is placed in the socket it is surrounded by a coil of wire in the switch which is the antenna , so you could say the range was about an inch ....
The keyless drive version is completely different with 7 aerials in the car to pick up the signal . there are no electronics in the plastic knob it just enables you to turn the ignition switch .. hope that helps ..

Hi. I have a problem with my 2008 XC70's ignition port that takes a battery controlled fob to start the engine.
The fob usually slides in and out smoothly and next to the entry port there is a button to start the engine. My problem is that the mechanism that allows the key to enter and be removed is sticking. Nothing wrong with the key fob and I've tried the spare one as well. This is an issue with the entry port. I've checked that nothing is blocking it or sticking out. Is there a spring that allows the key to automatically slide in and out when manually pushed, that may need repair? If so, what is this dashboard item called so I can ring Volvo spares and see if it is replaceable? Any information would be really useful. Nothing has happened btw to make this happen. It's a first that began a couple of days ago. |
