Angry Starting Problems 1996 440 GLT B20F

Hello everyone, I am hoping there is someone here who can help with eratic starting problems.
About 2 weeks ago the car starting playing up, it would not unlock on the fob unless I was right next to the car, so I change the batteries in the fob, problem remained on some occassions. Then last weekend the car would not start, very sluggish on the starter just about turning like a battery problem, checked the battery fully charged. Got back in the car tried again started no problems. Checked all earth points and cleaned them just in case, next morning same thing very sluggish, took about 20 attempts them started no problems. Checked diagnostic socket for fault codes got 1.1.1. Took battery off and put it on charge overnight, car started no problem for about 5 or 6 times then sluggish again. While I had the battery off I checked the relays under the dash, all seem OK.
Can anyone tell me the size of the socket to get the steering wheel off ?
And another odd one when the battery is off if I turn the key in the ignition I get a mechanical click turning to position 1 and like a spark ( electrical click) between position 1 and 2 any ideas , no battery no power ???

Does your model have an Ignition multi-plug next to the coil? It is a booster thing to aid starting. Mine has one & I've replaced it.

I think that only the turbo's out of the 1.7 models have them - now not sure about the 2.0 models like yours?

If you have one try a bit of contact cleaner on the multi-plug if no good replace maybe. There was a place in Southsea (Portsmouth) that supplied Bosch ones (which are OE) for around £20 IIRC.

Good Luck.
