Default ECU Problems

New owner of S80 d5 2005 Auto 103k
Car is in excellent condition, previous owner was elderly and only did few miles in his ownership.
However, after days I noticed when on motorways the speed did not want to go more than 65mph, it showed message engine needs service, then Soot Filter Full see manual. To cut a long story short! 3 garages (2 diagnostic specialists) could not get a reading from the ECU just 2 volts instead of 12. Also the car does not have a DPF
I am not sure what to do next, I plan to get to the bottom of the problem because I love the car and hoped someone may be able to help me or give advice.
It drives great but when you go up a steep hill it has no power plus the soot filter message.
I am very reluctant to overtake as I need a long straight flat road to succeed.
Hope someone can help

Yes you have DPF if you have a a soot filter full message . A Diesel Particulate filter = Soot Filter.

The soot filter full message isn't terminal , you have a chance to go out for a run on the motorway for half an hour and it will regenerate and burn all the soot out .. unless you have some other problem too.
You need to get the fault codes read and see what else might be wrong .

Thanks for the reply

There is no DPF on the car 3 garages have confirmed this, it was never fitted with one that is why I am at a loss with the issues I mentioned.
I have no idea why the soot filter messages show.

My thoughts were the same as yours until I found there was no DPF fitted

Thanks Ewan

What colour is the engine cover?
Black - no DPF
Silver - has DPF

Remember seeing a thread years ago about a false soot filter message on a euro 3 engine. May be worth looking for that thread.

Re fault codes it might be worth checking what systems the diagnostic specialists were using because volvo is a bit funny in that usually they need a VIDA system to connect properly

Better to see if anyone on the forum is near you to help out, or ask to buy it and someone will be along to offer assistance I'm sure

Is useful to have anyway if you're planning to keep it long term, also tells you all your part numbers and has diagrams etc plus live data, resetting various things etc etc

Hi Guys
Yes it’s a black cover, I shall try to find thread you mentioned.
I have a chance of taking it to Glasgow Voltech to see if they can get to the bottom of it.
Thanks for the info everyone
Cheers Ewan

There is some kind of software problem then , has someone tampered with the ECU ? The ECU thinks there is a DPP to put that message up

what are the fault codes in the ECM?
they should be 4 characters eg ECM 930A

Unfortunately the garages could not get a reading from the ECU
The other fault message that shows up is engine needs service (been done)

I have it lined up to go to Voltech independent Volvo garage in Glasgow hopefully
So sorry no codes to give at present

the post above rings a bell about the message being an error , the dealer has a service bulletin about it so don't waste money with someone else as they will never fix it .
