Wheel bearing - Best plan of attack
My front nearside bearing is rumbling and requires replacing. Has anyone replaced theirs and how did you go about it? Is it best to get a hydraulic press or go with a gen 2 on-car puller? Any info appreciated.

I replaced mine around 2 years ago... Taken the hub assembly off and used a bench press. Taking it out is much harder than putting it back in....

...and don't buy a cheap chinese one on e-bay.
Get genuine Volvo, SKF or similar or you will likely be doing it again soon. The bottom bolt on the strut can be a challenge too - start soaking it in penetrating fluid a few days before.

I used a Gen2 on car puller when I did mine, I then sold it for £10 less than I paid for it.
It's worth thinking about doing that if you don't think you'll use it again. It makes the overall repair cheaper and much easier than doing it without. As above, use a good quality replacement bearing to save future issues, I bought FAG bearings that came with Volvo part number on them but at a much cheaper price. Terry |
