Hi all,
just joined tonight and in case anyone hasnt seen my intro post ill say Helloooo here too.... Iv recently just bought an 03 S80 D5 with 122k....Its in pretty good nick and i plan on tidying it up in work but have just 1 or 2 small questions for the Forum... When i bought it the Transmission Service light came on after a few days and since i was bringing it to my Mechanic i decided to get him to give it the once over... As it turns out the car is in very good shape mechanically albeit for this one fault code that translates to the Box.... From doing a little digging over the net it seems that this code is a Neutral/ No Neutral check.... 1st... Is this something that i need to be alarmed about? The car seems to drive fine except for the odd issue where it seems to get confused that it has to shift from Neutral to drive when in traffic... This seems to be more prominent when the car is at operating temperature...When its cold i barely feel the clunk... As its intermittent im guessing it may not be something serious. I just hope that i havent bought a Lemon...I would hate to think that the car is bad just because of a box. Also i read that the AW 50/51 gearbox takes 7.1ltrs of ATF Fluid....Yet when i gave them to my Mechanic...He only used 4...Simply replacing what came out of the box.. Is this right?. Sorry if the post is a bit long winded but i think that this is maybe the best place to get straight answers... All those American sites just seem to be doom and gloom and to just change the box for a new one or get it reconditioned which isnt exactly feasible at the moment. |

There was modified software for this fault code but in some cases it's too late and could require a new gearbox but usually the software fix works! The problem is when draining an auto gearbox is you can't always get the oil out of the torque converter which holds the majority of oil which is why he has only used 4litres!

Is it possible to get the other 3 out of the converter?.... And if not was the change of the other 4 litres just wasted effort on my behalf? |

Hi mate it won't do it any harm and is not a waste of money it actually should help when you get the software updated. There was a journal launched late last year for this code so with the box oil refreshed it should solve the problem!

Thanks a million for the response Pal. Its a reassurance to know as im a big Volvo fan simply for the safety and the reliability with the brand alone... And iv big plans for this car in the next few years....I know shes a big ol barge but at the same time with petrol prices going the way they are buying the D5 seemed a no brainer. |

Your D5 is one of the finest on the market. It has torque, power and refinement. It also is frugal, reliable and virtually indestructible. The D5 in my '02 S60 went 186,500 mi w/o a hitch, using less than 0.25 litres of engine oil per 12,000-mi service interval. You should expect it to last for 350,000 mi. Owing to coachwork damage beyond economic repair and changed driving routes over roads liable to flooding my S60 is now a parts car, but I love it to bits.
