Default Confused about oil

Hi

I bought a 11 reg Volvo V50 1.6 D2 Drive (manual) with the D4162T engine a few months ago, it has 43 K on the clock. Nice, comfortable car but rather under powered !

About to do a DIY oil change. The Haynes manual says use 5/30 as does the Volvo manual. However a mechanic at a Volvo dealer told me they now put in Castrol Edge 0/30 to avoid "issues". The Volvo internet support site also says 0/30 for the D4162T engine in other models.

Most of the internet oil finders say 5/30 but Luqui Moly states both!

Any advice?

Many thanks

The correct oil for the D4162T ( D2) is 0w/30 ..
5w/30 was for the old D4164T ( 1.6D ) engine

The D4162T has more power than the earlier engine (115 bhp) underpowered ? what are you used to then ? :-)

Smile More fun with oil

Hi Clan

Many thanks for getting back to me so quickly - much appreciated - with a clear response .

The last car was a SEAT Cordoba which lasted 19 years and went like a rocket.

Well Volvo Customer Support in Maidenhead are telling me I am a complete muppet for thinking about 0/30 as their database VIN check says 5/30.

I have tactfully suggested that as there is a big factory sticker on my engine saying D4162T and their support website says 0/30 for other models with this engine perhaps their database may not be quite correct!

I have quoted your advice on the volvo forum asked them to escalate this to someone who knows more about engines and oil than databases.

Regards and thanks again

Chris

The V50 was always able to use both the oils whilst the new V40 with the same D4162T was designated 0w/30 only, maybe that is why there is some confusion . If you want the best protection and fuel economy go 0w/30 ...
