I know the hose is not needed on injected engines, but not sure about carbs.
That was on my mind when I raised the thread. I can't find much info on the B230K engines.

Hi,

I had a 240 with a 2.3 carb engine and I had removed the warming system.
No great issues experienced.
Never got cold enough to be an issue.
It was freezing now and then..

I'm having a proper look tomorrow when I can strip it while I'm 5 minutes away from a salvage breakers!
I collected a 740 last year, on way back the electrics died on the M6. AA man came to my rescue but couldn't find a fault. Car came back to life once started by jump lead.
1/2 an hour down the road it happened again. A second AA man rescued me and found the alternator had worked loose. There was a spare one in the car, (seller had obviously known of problem), and when fitted got me home. On inspection the mounting on the old one had broken in such a way that it could appear firmly fixed at one moment, then jump out of place and slacken off the belts. It was not possible to see this without removing it.

Default Matching belts!

If you go to the SEARCH option and type in MATCHED BELTS you will see various threads scroll down to the eleventh one "Fan belts one loose, one tight" and go to the fifth answer down which was my reply it will help you get two belts that are equal in length.
Belts that are just the same part number can vary tremendously.Halfords will tell you that it doesn't make any difference.
Or go to volvo dealer who should have matched belts on the shelf.
Good luck Brian.

You are correct , the carburetion is calibrated to the air inlet temperature being 35 C , that is what the hot air pipe is for .. without it the engine will take longer to warm up and also use more fuel as you will have the choke out longer . It is remarkable how soon it can be pushed in after a cold start in winter when the hot air intake pipe is there and working ... Thats why the emissions will be poorer without it ..
There is also the danger of the car stopping too under certain conditions of humidity and temperature as the carburettor will ice up .
Only do away with the pipe if you live in a climate where the ambient temperature is ALWAYS over 35 C :-)
Volvo spend a lot of time and money on making your car what it is , they dont put things there that are not necessary ! That goes for injected engines as well ... It all helps with drivability and economy and emissions ...
