A1 and 1 series are very small German cars

I do wish Volvo had carried on with proper engined fast estates though. I suppose that's just the way things are going.

Anyway, enough of this thread hijacking

So are quite a few Volvo's. I don't think where they are made is the issue though.

Anyhow back to life with my 960 ....

So I always knew that at some point I would have to deal with the signs of tin worm appearing on the old girl and a fortuitous loss and retrieval of the offside front mud-flap revealed the truth.

Surface rust and paint bubbling appearing on the front wing hidden under the mud-flap and where there is one patch there is sure to be more!

So I really looked for it and sure enough under each mud-flap and about to spread to the wheel arches the same paint bubbling and surface rust... so I have bitten the kinetic projectile and taken the beast to a body shop for a quote...

Pics of the offending rust will follow

If I were 30 years younger and able to get up having got down I would probably have a go myself but since I am not I will leave it to a professional.

Plus I will have the dent in my front passenger door pulled (thanks neighbours) and get some paint chips touched up too whilst it is there.

Quite miss my old 960 estate. Late model with the 204bhp 3.0 engine. Lazy except when it wasn't. Which was quite often. Another car I should never have sold.

Here's the offending rust where the mud-flap met curb whilst reversing into a drive and ripped it off ..

And here is a paint flake on the front bumper where a stone hit it!

I had the same on both my front wings where the mudflaps had been badly fitted. It will be worse on the inside so you might have to remove wings. I ended up with two new ones

Not too bad. Probably a clean with grinder, treat rust and prime and repaint. I had a look under my 96 940 today and noticed my sill ends are just starting to bubble, so will do the above. Sill very good as owner in past must of treated the chassis cavity as rubber bungs in ends.

Pity I noticed battery tray corners rusting through to the offside front wheel arch under the battery cables. Not bad for the age though!

James.

I think the blanking grommets in the sill end caps are part of Volvos original rustproofing program James, once you've repaired the cosmetic stuff might be an idea to get some Bilt Hambner rust proofing treatment and lance (the modern better idea of Waxoyl but made by a different company) and spray the insides of the sills with it.

That's the sort of thing i mean.

Heard good things on Bilt Hamber. Will do it soon, as want to keep the tin worm at bay! Tend to clean underside every few years and treat with waxoil underneath with a couple of cans and wheel arches.
