The only way to really tell is by brimming and calculating. I did it once and didn't like the results as much as the little Volvo reading

Well I call it Smiles per Gallon both my Fat Slags are less than frugal but they both make me smile so hey ho and when you plant that right foot boy does that V8 sing a song that makes angels weep.

And of course I still love the smooth relaxed grace and pace the 960s 3.0ltr 24v Six gives me too. The Goddess is my true Volvo love and the S80 is more a fun round the back of the pub kinda girl.. fast and juicy

About 6 years ago Mark, a friend of mine from Cambridge bought a 4.3 V8 (2000/W reg Lexus LS430) from near Glasgow airport via ebay.
By foot, train, taxi and then plane from Norwich, he got to Glasgow airport early in the morning and was collected by the vendor.

He brimmed the tank and zeroed the trip meter and on-board fuel computer.

When he got home, he brimmed the tank again and checked the mileage on the trip and worked it out to 37.2mpg and confirmed the mileage against Google Maps which was within a mile or two. Given the fuel station was about the same distance away as the mileage discrepancy, he ignored it and was happy that his figures were reasonably accurate.
Checking the cars on-board fuel computer, that said 36.8mpg so that was reasonably accurate too.

Sometimes a V8 will in fact improve economy because it can be geared higher and generally gives the car a better power to weight ratio, for example the Rover P5 3 Litre (straight 6) was much more thirsty than the Rover P5 3.5 Litre V8 because the V8 was more powerful, more torquey and could pull a higher final drive and still outperform the 3 Litre.

That said, i would expect Bens S80 V8 to give better than 23.8mpg given it's a much more modern design than either of those already mentioned and is running a (theoretically) more modern engine management system.
Perhaps he likes the loud pedal a bit too much though!

Many moons ago when i ran a series of SD1 V8s, i regularly got ~28mpg no matter how i drove them including one "enthusiastic" trip where i covered 35 miles in 23 minutes. In other words, just because it's a V8 it doesn't mean it's thirsty.

That's not really my point Dave. The problem is the Volvo mpg computer giving a reading above the actual correct consumption.

Remember a little while back certain other manufactures claiming dodgy figures for their cars. I've never seen a car test get anywhere near the claimed mpg that manufacturers list as well

Perhaps the Japanese are more honest

Most seem to be in the region of 20mpg US which equates to 25mpg UK as our gallons are 25% bigger than US gallons.

I can't comment on the Volvo fuel computer as i've never had one, only had a fuel computer on two cars i've owned, both 1988 and they were both reasonably accurate and neither were Volvos.

The 2008 models don't seem to be very eco with an average of 14.9

It's pretty much accepted that the Volvo ones read a fair bit over. My 2012 V70 certainly does

Well Fat Slag#2s fuel economy argument aside...

My true love my big rear end lovely the Goddess sailed through her MOT with just one advisory on her cracked front screen.

As the guys at Mill Hill Garage said your car has some really cleaver engineering and they just don't make them like that anymore.

Anyhow that means there's another year of 960 Goddess goodness being on the road

Now she's done I can get the S80 in for the advisories

Also I am told the splash tray is damaged so I will source a new one for Fat Slag#2

And I think while she is in getting those done I will get an engine service, get the fluids (Engine and Drivetrain) changed and brakes checked.

I expect that will be a nice chunk of change but you don't buy a FFS (Fast Fat Slag) and skimp on the service

Then the fleet will be sweet and good to go
