Fuel economy is of little interest with my low miles. Neither are emissions as I don't crawl traffic. My little Honda Jazz is 0w 30 recommended. I have done 90 k on it with 5/30. It also has rubbish water based paint for health and safety reasons, but I would spray it in poisonous 2k if I got the chance.
I do believe the valve lifter and possible fuel dilution, was what swayed me. There is usually some leeway with oils. Where is the evidence of an oil like Mobil A5/B5 3000 doing damage to the big d5 engine? I have had many engines with sprayed lube to pistons and they never ran 0/30 oil.........or even synthetic. In fact, when I bought oil in 45gal drums, Millers tech insisted that the only advantage really of a synthetic oil, was on cold start up. We could talk about oils all day. There is a really well known transmission specialist who have done multi million pounds worth of business in that game. Our gearboxes are Aisin in these Volvo and use Jws 3309 or the later WS version. Guess what they use? LT71141.................Shock horror! That fluid is for ZF boxes. They say they have never had a problem and will re-build your box and g/tee for 3 years with that fluid. I checked the spec sheet for those oils and there was very little difference Maybe this slavishness to exact oil company and manufacture spec is not all it seems. A mate of mine has Honda outboard. Spec is 5/30 oil. Engine is 26 years old and he only ever put 20/50 in it. Temperate climate has something to do with it. PSA did a similar thing with HDi engines. They changed the spec to thinner fuel economy oils while previously using 15/40. I kept using my mineral Fleet oil 15/w 40 on my hdi and even V6 petrols. |

My personal view, as you will have gathered, is that an oil which is within a range of Manufacturer-recommended specs doesn't suddenly become an engine-wrecker, and can be used with confidence. Were that not the case, I think we would have heard about it by now, but it seems that most Volvos keep truckin' on (or their engines do at least) for many hundreds of thousands of miles Now we could equally well have a conversation about Volvo's transition of ATF to 3324 from 3309 spec in what I understand to be exactly the same gearbox, and strident warnings about same - but I suspect that might derail thread even further! |

10 litres of Mobil 3000 for £56 delivered. It will do a Jazz and a d5 oil change. I have never bought a Genuine oil filter for any car either. Fleetgaurd( cummins) Purflux and Mann all my days on over 40 vehicles. It is a lot easier for companies to standardise something across the board rather than tell Swedish dealers in severe climate to use one oil and uk ones to use another in their temperate climes. Clan's bulletin mentions not to use 0W40. If you have to tell a dealer that an 0w40 is jumping across 3 grades rather than two, then WTH? Every manufacturer of something has a sales and pr agenda. Mpg and thin oils, water based paint, claimed mpg etc etc. Any time I have went into a main stealer and talked about the car I have to the techs there, I have left with the feeling that they know little and are even less interested in the bigger picture of cars. Techs? Even the Salesman have a laugh about that! Don't even know what oil is in this car atm. I bought it 1000miles ago from an Audi dealer who also have Volvo franchise. They changed the oil and filters. Maybe they got Volvo filter and oil? Maybe they used what they put in Audi's.? Ask them? nobody knows or remembers ..........and they don't let you talk to "techs" on the phone.lol |

[QUOTE=darroch;2787161]Yip. Why put an oil in that is good for 18k when you change at 7k.

Fleetgaurd( cummins) Purflux and Mann all my days on over 40 vehicles. I have just changed the oil on my 2006 D5 and bought a genuine oil service kit from a Volvo dealer (from Ebay) and that was around £56 delivered. I can go 18000 miles (if I choose to) so that works out more economical than £56 for 10 Ltrs of mobil 3000 and changing at 7000 miles so why not just shop around and buy the correct stuff in the first place???? I am not questioning the views of any one on here, just pointing out that Genuine ( yes i know volvo dont manufacture oil ) is not necessarily that far from the price of other alternatives and at least I know I have put in what volvo (hopefully) would have put in if they serviced it for me. |

[QUOTE=lynns hubby;2787199] Maybe, or it was marketed as a selling point for leasing companies etc etc. Once one manufacturer offered it , the rest just had to follow suit.

VOLVO VCC RBS0-2AE 0W/20 so you could say it's their oil even if its made for them by Castrol to their specification just like their relation ship with their other component suppliers .. .
