Default C30 - Brown marks on bodywork: rust?

Hello again people, another brain teaser for you

Ive noticed a brown colour appearing on some edges of the bodywork on my c30 2009, mainly to the edge of the fuel cap and the edge of the door opening. (Photos attached)

My immediate thought is rust coming through, but a closer look is telling me that it seems to be on top of the paint, not coming through from underneath it. Plus its smooth to touch, not like its corrosion i.e. rust.

Has anyone got any ideas or experience as to what/why this might be?? Is it just a case of shoddy spray work using a substandard paint maybe? Or could it indeed be the first signs of rust developing?

Any input appreciate 🎅👍🏼

Thanks

Give it a light rub with some t cut or similar but don't get too heavy handed being on the edge of the panel. Doubt it would be rust, just ingrained dirt I would imagine

To me it looks like the laquer is damaged and dirt and moisture is penetrating under laquer but on top of paint. My suspicion is because of the location. aggressive cleaning and polishing on edges wears through top coat in no time at all (one bad polish could do it!!). gently feel if there is a lip with yr fingernail... if so, its a clean up and blow over with clear coat. not a big deal.

I think it's muck, catching on the leading edges. Try a tar remover product or a clay bar (with a solution so it doesn't stick), or some quite strong APC (all purpose cleaner for cars from a detailing site). I think that will come off. Doesn't look like rust at all to my eye.

It looks like two cars welded together, badly, don't drive it, take it straight to Kwik Fit for a brake check and see what they say.

Alternatively, try a clay bar and gently work it over the brown stainage and if successful follow up with a nice coat of wax for protection.

Sorry the other stuff was a joke
