Default Intermittent brake vibration

I have a 88000 mile Uk 1998 v70r, auto petrol and have been getting intermittent vibrations under braking for a week or so now. Last fixes- new pads, brake fluid replaced (and Ok) tyres and pressures ok. I can brake hard from 50 to 10 several times ok then the next time get a bad fast vibration through the brake pedal and vibrating the whole car. Leave everything to cool and is ok again.
Is this an abs problem even tho I have no warning lights?
I would appreciate your help please.
Regards,
Steve

Could well be ABS, I'd suspect a cracked or corroded reluctor ring. This won't give a code, as the system just thinks that one wheel is skidding, so it activates the system as it should. Could be a sensor, but more likely the ring.

Might not get it through the pedal as you have described, but I had a vibration when braking from higher speeds that wasn't evident at slower speeds. I know you say you have changed the brake pads, but have you checked the handbrake shoes......my problem turned out to be as simple as the linings parting company with the shoes, this caused a vibration almost like a warped disc (though as I said, not evident at slower speeds as you would expect with a warped disc). Might not be what you are looking for but certainly worth a check?

Now its getting a bit more complicated, the vibration is not speed related and also occurs when I am stationary if I have the car stopped on the brakes and increase the revs. Now I am thinking auto box problems, does this make sense? The problem is intermittent and worsens after spirited (not silly) driving. Sometimes I can stop with no vibration, next stop I get a mild judder the next stop is a tooth rattling judder that scares the passenger. The vibration keeps going at the same rate till I stop and the frequency is the same as the speed reduces. I can reduce or stop it by cadance braking. I can reproduce it by gently increasing the revs from tick over with the car in drive and the footbrake pressed so no car movement but I have not risked doing that with the bonnet raised to see if the engine is flapping around. The upper engine mount is cracked but as far as I can see not failed completely and there are no other clunks etc when I accelerate or brake hard.
Any pointers would be gratefully received.

Have you recently replaced the rear discs?
