Unhappy Engine overheated - lower coolant hoses

Engine overheated a couple days ago in slower traffic, the temp gauge touched the red area for about a mile before I could pull over. I had to put in 6 litres. So before that there's a good chance I covered 50 miles with only about 2 litres left in the system. Hope I haven't damaged anything.

The two coolant hoses under the turbo were on their last legs, and the hose clips were super overtightened:

Part numbers:
9161383 - Hose - £6.60
9161384 - Hose - £9.96

I also changed the hose clips to 'JCS HiGrip Stainless' types, as they have a wider 13mm band and don't cut into the hose. (14-22mm size)

Other parts that I replaced at the same time:

9445462 - Filler Cap (green, 150kpa) - £14.64
273459 - Thermostat (87c) - £17.04

Question hope the engine is ok.

first, really hope the engine is ok , good luck with that.

this thread just shows what i am always ranting on about , one of the best things to do when maintaining a car is a good visual look, tyres brakes hoses radiator wiring and belts.

I'd keep an eye on the headgasket, those hoses failing have a nasty habit of taking it out.

I replace mine every few years, they fail often, probably because they get splashed by oil every time the filter is changed.

One more good reason to to fit a coolant level warning lamp/sensor.

Mine paid for itself when the heater control valve started dumping water onto the road.

Oh crap! Now its leaking oil at the oil/water sandwich:

Looks like I now need part number 5 on this diagram. Has anyone removed the oil/water sandwich thing before? Is it a simple bolt to remove or is a special tool required?

It just unbolts no special tools. I wouldn't be surprised if the block seal is leaking. The bolt on the bracket (6) has a weird habit of snapping and then the whole thing moves.

Hi,

Sorry, I meant undoing the threaded thing (8). I think the block seal is OK, I certainly don't want to disturb it if I can get away with it.

It's just a nut, nothing special

Great thread, thanks.

Definitely a maintenance task for anyone hoping their car will stay on the road, and a pretty cheap one at that.

Is this arrangement a sort of elementary oil cooler? My auto has the gearbox oil going through the water radiator, is this the same concept?

Yes it it is a basic water-oil charge cooler.
It also repositions the oil filter (on the turbo models) so as not to foul the turbocharger.

Interestingly, my old 1990 2.3 Turbo had a proper oil cooling rad mounted next to the main radiator:
