Anybody else think that a 1.6 diesel in a car this size is going to be a bit sluggish?

Does it really matter if A roads are limited to 50mph and average speed cameras everywhere ?

That combined with the increase in fuel duty I don't think the buyer of an S80 1.6D is going to be too concerned about 0-60 times or in gear pull (though in gear should be adequate from a diesel).

The car will not be on the wish list of the caravan or pony club.

I agree, 1.6D does sound low powered.

After owning a dissapointing 140ps Passat, I purchased my first Volvo 2 weeks ago. After doing 1500 miles in 2 weeks I have to give this a rave review.

The truth is, some people will always read the stats and scoff at this car. But they just dont get it. It eats up the motorway miles at 80-90 and cruises effortlessly in all situations. Smooth, refined, capable are the watchwords for this car. Overtaking is not scary either but you do need to learn where the power band is to do this properly. You never feel short changed by the engine, it really delivers.

Low company car tax, premium interior, seating perfection and I think it looks good too. Unfortunately for Volvo I think the Drive version of the S80 is a hard sell, all the better for me as I dont like being a 3 series clone driver. I will lay money down that in 5 years time, all the manufacturers will be tuning the engines for economy (refinement) rather than power. After all, the UK roads are not built for sports tuned chasis (my 2nd car is a Civic Type R so I am speaking from experience here). Maybe Volvo will be leading the pack on this one. Well done Volvo, highly recommended.
