Default B5244s2 - b5244s TOTALLY IDENTICAL?

Hi guys

I'm about to purchase donor engine for my beloved V70. My original B5244S2 started making funny noises recently, and at 190K I thought I’ll be better off with a donor one and leave the investigation of the trouble for the post-mortem.
Now I actually purchased one already and it was supposed to arrive today, but instead of pallet with engine, I received a phone call with excuses and refund.
So naturally in the search for the next one I thought if I could broaden my hunt and include B5244S, not only B5244S2 – everybody says they are mechanically identical, the only difference being some of the gearbox ratios.

However I need reliable answer – can someone please confirm from experience or from well trusted source – are B5244S2 and B5244S all the same block- and head-wise?
And that includes cams, VVT piston and anything else I might be overlooking in my ignorance.

I will leave the question why did they bother calling them different open.

Cheers

My Xc engine is the B5254T2 2.5T, it has identical bore as the 2.4 (83mm) but a longer stroke, 93.2 mm instead of 90mm in 2.4. (140 and 170hp)

2.5T has 210hp and 320NM torque (on 98ron)

If its any help I have a MY2001 S80 auto petrol (170 bhp) and the engine is a B5244S. I too wondered for a long while what the difference was between it and the 140 version before concluding it was just the software - there may be some difference in the gearing. Back in 2001 it was no slouch off the mark and its not too bad today particularly if you can bear to hear the wheels with all that weight on them spinning at take off.
