Default 2007 XC90 D5 Engine Belt Change Advice

Hi,

My jeep is hitting 200k shortly and I am going to replace all belts and related parts. Its a D5244T4 engine.

I found the servicing schedule plan in this website; http://www.volvohowto.com/servicing-...-2005-to-2015/

It says....'Additionally every ten years or 180.000 kms / 108.000 miles, schedule service interval:

1. If D5244Tx engine: Replace Outer Auxiliary belt and belt tensioner, Replace Inner Auxiliary belt and belt tensioner, Replace Timing belt, belt tensioner and idler pulley'

Do I have a 'Inner Auxiliary belt' and 'idler pulley'? What I can see are timing belt, drive belt and tensioner with 2 pulleys.

Thanks in advance

Zak

You have one auxiliary belt, which powers the a/c compressor, power steering & alternator. Then there’s a tensioner for that belt. All these parts should be replaced.

Then there’s the timing belt, a timing belt tensioner & idler pulley - These should be replaced.

Some Volvo’s have an auxiliary belt & a separate a/c belt, but the XC90 doesn’t. You have one belt that powers multiple items like the a/c compressor, alternator & power steering all with one long belt, plus a timing belt.

If your changing the rear disks, then while you are in there check the condition of the parking brake shoe expanders at the cable end, clean up and free or replace, and if they are not Volvo shoes (with the flat spot on the lining) maybe change the shoes and springs whilst its all in bits.

Hope it helps.

Im going to check and clean or replace wiring connectors in the engine area as well.

I thought I'd share my experience with you guys....

When we were on our way to The Lakes on holiday from my place Nottingham, we wanted to visit Blackpool. So when nearing the beach, my gearbox failed giving me these two messages with red triangle:

Engine system service required
Transmission service urgent ( a dash ' - ' displayed)

Gearbox actually went to limp mode and got stuck in 3rd gear. I just took the risk and drove to the beach and parked in a bay. RAC guy scanned it found No2 injector faulty. He cleared the code and did a test drive. Car was all fine after that but he advised me not to drive any further, and recommended a specialist garage in Kendal to get the injector replaced.

From my DIY experience, if the fault doesn't return straight away, that means its an electrical issue, not actually the part itself (please correct me if Im wrong). I said okay to him and drove to my B&B in Windermere. Halfway, after driving 30 miles the problem came back again. So I took a B road and got my destination.

Next day I did a bit of an investigation on that No2 injector and found out the connector was all loose. The internal contact surface was all rusty and dusty. I cleaned it with wifey's nail polish remover. Started the engine and all back to normal.

As the connection was poor, ECU wasn't getting any response from the injector, so the failsafe moved kicked in, limiting the gear to 3rd. Now the car is running all fine. To be honest, I had some vibration and that is gone too

Not really much else… that’s a very comprehensive list!

With regards to the water pump, get a genuine one. Don’t use a cheap aftermarket one.

Volvo water pumps are generally very reliable. There’s cars with hundreds of thousands of miles with the original pumps fitted. That’s why I suggest using genuine.

There are 5 places where you can change the oil on an XC90 (willing to be corrected)
Engine/Gearbox/Bevel gear/Haldex/Rear Diff.
To complete your list of transmission maintenance tasks, It sounds like you have not done 3 and 5?

Thakns a lot for this mate. Yeah..I didn't have 3 and 5 on the list but added now . I'm working on lifters and rocker arms, so oil changes not done yet.

O rings and seals were fully dried and stiff like plastic. So far I've replaced these on:

vacuum pump - all 4 of them
oil filter casing - 2
power steering hose where it connects to the rack
Intake manifold gasket
