Any luck with your steering. I have the same issue. Took it to inde garage and they diagnosed as a rack failure. Had it replaced but does not seem any lighter but the seizing up has gone. Nick

Regarding a sticky power steering rack I had this about 15 years ago on an Escort Cosworth & my Mechanic poured in a power steering additive that cured the sticking fully. I see Lucas do something similar but I'm not sure what would have gone into my Escort at the time.
Worth investigating as it's a very v cheap initial option. |

How many people do flush their steering fluid as part of general maintenance - I flushed mine with the right volvo fluid at about 70k and have had no issues at 92k now (touch wood).
I did have some squealing on the steering in the winter when cold - but traced that down to the rubber bush the steering column goes through in the cabin. A spray wit silicone spray got rid of it - I had initially thought the rack was going but was much simpler to fix! lol |
