Help noise...
Xc90 185 d5 with 170k miles. Tonight it started making clattering noise from top of engine that sounds like a woodpecker in the engine.
It could be a sticking lifter/ broken lifter? I had a similar sound in the past in a Mitsubishi and it turned out to be big end bearings. Does anyone have suggestion to rule out or in big end trouble without taking engine out. Can the sump come off without removing engine.? Tony. |

I did the listening trick and found that the first and last both sound bad, especially the first. Surprisingly disconnecting the electrical connection to the first made no difference to the overall sound of the engine but I feel it reduced the '' wood pecker'' a little, disconnecting the last made no real difference.
the engine would not run with both disconnected, not enough sense to try disconnecting 2, 3, 4 I did a leak off test and in 6 minutes the results were 47 47 60 65 33 earlier test with poor time keeping but around 6 mins 42 47 55 56 30 strangely the first test the diesel from the first injector was dirty and cloudy. not in the second.. the fuel in the fuel filter drain is perfectly clean. I am thinking about an injector cleaner run in a closed loop ? Is it normal to have water dropping from the exhaust.? |

Thought of that too late. Injectors out. Will try to post photos later. 3 look OK in the sense that they are only covered in carbon. Other two are actually rusty and look as if they were found in a field.
Took rocker cover off. Intakes covered in a layer of crud as are swirl flaps. Timing belt coming off after tea and then tappets out for a look. Photos when I get a teenager to do computer work. Tony. |

Condensation in a "cold"exhaust is normal look at petrol engines because of their lambda they have no air dillution and they condensate even more! |

Things have moved on. Many of the tappets were in bits literally. Some stuck solid from bad oil. Turbo pipe full of oil, some pevious owner had drilled a hole in plastic pipe and inserted small tec screw, to allow oil to be drained out
Suspect intercooler has a drop of oil inside also. Intake manifold filled with oily gunge. Swirl flaps and inlets in head coated in gunge Injectors covered in carbon. One of them was rusty and looked as if it had been found in a field, two have rust/corrosion on their sides. EGR well covered in carbon. Car in bits now new tappets followers and valve oil seals on route from Skandia. I suspect car did not see fully syntethic for years. and was simply burning oil. it may have been close to running away on its own oil It used more than a liter in 800 miles.... Just need to get turbo off and hope that it just needs seals?. Bolts seized and near impossible to get at. With all the space on top now it should fit out from above, I really do not fancy stripping anymore off the car in order to get turbo out from underneath. Tony. |
