Cam Belt Change
Good afternoon,
A friend of mine has a 2016 Volvo V40 D3 diesel that will need a new cam belt in the next 10,000 miles or so. I've just looked through a YouTube video and it doesn't look too scary (well, compared with a 240 it is scary of course...). Has anyone done this job, and if so is there anything to be concerned about? Alan

Hi.
It was quite a while ago and i don`t remember too much detail but i do remember the biggest challenge is the crankshaft pulley nut . If you use a breaker-bar and torque wrench you need the car high up in order to get enough swing on it . If i did the job again i would use a high torque impact wrench .
A crankshaft holding / locking tool . Also i seem to remember that there are different auxillary belt layouts . As you have to remove all these in order to get to the timing belt you should change those . The water pump is bomb-proof . I bought one but didn`t fit it as the old pump was like new . I just needed the gasket . |

I'm guessing you just put the car in a low gear and wedged on the handbrake to lock the crank? Perhaps there is some sort of crank locking tool though? I'll do some research into that. The water pump isn't leaking, so perhaps I'll leave that alone. I take your point about the ancillary belt, it looks tricky to get at otherwise so I'll suggest (to the owner) that we change that at the same time. Many thanks again, Alan PS. This was my first post in the V40 area - it all feels so modern compared with Amazons and 240s
