I had a XC60 that would do it once every 6 months or so and then be fine...

The error is generated from a control module so there will be a error code stored. If it never does it again, I wouldn't bother, if it repeats you should get the code read at a Volvo dealer or Indie.

Often it's the suspension height level sensors, not a major job.

What's this talk of self leveling suspension on 09-17 XC60s?

The springs and shocks look bog standard nothing like any self leveling/adjustable system I've ever seen. In use XC60s never feel like they have self leveling suspension and there is no mention of it in the owners manual.

Someone got a link to any info. on this?

Hi the cars with the xenon Hid Headlamps have self leveling rear suspension .
Cars with Halogen headlamps have a thumb wheel on the light control panel . Page 96 in handbook
Hope this helps

All the cars I've owned with HID lights have had self leveling lights not self leveling suspension. I find this hard to believe. Adjustable suspension systems that can raise/lower one corner independently are usually pneumatic and too slow to be of any use in dynamically controlling headlamp beam height.

If this is true it's a most odd design approach.

Not quite...

Self levelling suspension (Nivomat system) was an option but is not related to the headlights.

On cars with HID/ABL lights, there are level sensors on both the front and rear axles. When the car is started, the headlight control module takes readings and adjusts the headlamp cut-off beam height accordingly so as not to dazzle other road users if you have a lot of weight in the rear.
