You can use VIDA on your computer without DiCE, but you do need DiCE to connect VIDA to the car.

Will the car connect to the laptop with a normal obd2 to usb cable?

No, you must have the DICE interface.

You do not have to use the genuine Volvo-branded DICE unit.

Myself and many others successfully use the VCX Nano by Vxdiag instead of DICE which seems to be 100% compatible, at least I'm not aware of any VIDA function which doesn't work with it. It's another hardware implementation of the DICE protocol. While I originally wanted DICE they were scarce on the market when I got my car so I opted for a VCX instead. I haven't found cause to change to a genuine DICE yet.

The Nano connects to the OBD port and has a micro-USB port for upstream connection to your laptop.

Do you know if there is a cheaper option available?

I don't, no. I think the VCX was the cheaper option when I bought mine. Other members might know of more alternatives.

I've had my DICE clone tool on ebay for about £80 however that was years ago, 3 volvos and 2 laptops later it's still running strong. Definitely paid for itself at least x 10. I hear there is some sort of a shortage at the moment though and I've just searched ebay - my condolences to everyone who don't own one, is that the new crypto??? I'd be more that happy to provide free reads to anyone willing/able to drive to Edenbridge, Kent. Just PM me in advance

I have a spare Volvo Dice that I can let go.
PM me if you are interested though I'm not tech savvy therefore not sure if it will work with your software.
It works with the pirate Volvo software.
Regards,
