Thanks for reply Terzoid. Haven't been to Essex yet due family issues - mainly looking after grandson whilst mother has had several hospital stays (ah the joys of not working....). Also only yesterday we learn a dear old friend (and Volvo owner) has had to go to a care home after a fall so probably we have to get Power of Attorny as he is over 90. That means doing a full inventory of his extensive house and outbuildings as he's an avid early Austin fan....
Who said not working must be nice having all that spare time - try it! Got to change water pump on my 164 too: it was straightforward on my Amazon so intrigued to hear why yours is such a struggle.
My Essex trip will therefore be somewhere in March I guess: any chance you can supply quicker contact details in case you don't see this very often; my email paultill@tesco.net for direct contact.
Persevere !

Had a quick drive in my 164 last week as I try to use it over winter too. Noticed a bit of steam around the water pump and have been aware for a while it's been loosing a bit of coolant.
Got a spare water pump but decided to change the WP gaskets for starters. Having read this thread I think I'll flush through the cooling system using some Barrs rad flush or similar. As yet I've had no issues with my 164 overheating but I'll be interested to see what the rad flush brings forth...

After cleaning up all of the surfaces, including the underside of the head use just the thinnest possible trace of grease on the gasket both sides. With the bolts not quite snug, lever the pump up against the head before tightening the bolts. A length of 2 x 1 under the pump pushed up by a trolley jack can be controlled nicely.

Not Volvo but blocked block related.
I had a 1600 ford crossflow that was blocked solid behind number 4 cylinder, in the end I pulled the engine, removed water pump and core plugs, poked prodded and scraped as much as I could of the muck out and then blasted the water jacket with a pressure washer, lot of work but cured the problem.
