One issue that never seems to be mentioned is one of age. I'm 81, and I insure with Aviva at the moment. I have two vehicles on my policy, and I'll probably ad a third this month. I tried to get a feel for probable price increases, and they were reluctant to comment, but one thing they mentioed was that, whilst they are happy to continue cover with current customers with a good record, they do not accept new customers over the age of 80. Is this common, and am I locked into Aviva for the rest of my driving life?

Have you tried one of the insurance comparison sites? Just pop your details in and the amount of quotes you get back should give you a feel for whether or not it's a typical approach for more senior drivers

As per previous poster, have a look at Compare the Market or similar - it's a very useful site for getting a heads up on likely costs from year to year, and very easy to use once your details are in there.

My mum is 85 and her renewal with the Coop went from £467 to £1400 would you believe.
This is with no change in anything apart from their commercial greed. She was panicking.

Via CTM it came down to £530 with a 'big company'. Good luck !

Okay -

I tried

Money Supermarket,
Compare the market,
Confused.com
Direct Line,
Volvo Insurance,
Go Compare
Uswitch
Quotezone
LV

The cheapest I found was using Marshmallow using Compare the Market.

Your company lost 2 of our cars last year as well - there was no negotiation at the call centre, despite several years loyalty

Anyone knows if a Thatcham device could lower Volvo insurance and its its worth getting one?

Any recommendations?

How long is a piece of string in answer to your first question, but you could always phone your insurers a month before renewal and ask them for a quote with or without a Thatcham 1 immobiliser (and/or alarm).

Unless you have something particularly nickable / valuable, I wouldn't have thought it would make enough difference to be worth it for you to pay for fitting it.

Actually I tried to revise my insurance policy assuming I added a new thatcham device and there was no change/discount... so you are right.
