Default SORN & Road Fund Issue

Due to having moved on a bit with my motoring collection, I had the opportunity and cash to purchase an MGF. It is all good and flew through the MOT.

The car is now insured and taxed, whoo hoo! However, whilst doing the automated DVLA thing this evening as April is nearly upon us, it played a message informing me that the details were being passed on to the enforcement team as the car had been untaxed and not SORN'ed since the tax ran out at the end of Feb!

What sodding tax? There was nothing on the screen when I bought it and the car was sold as untaxed and unMOT'd. I presumed it was already SORN'ed.

So will this mean I will have to stump up for a sodding fine now? Marvellous, just what I needed. I finally manage to get ahead cash'wise and now this looming over my head.

Any thoughts (apart from me not having properly checked)?

Yes a simple letter explaining the situation along with any receipts for purchase and subsequent mot etc... will do the trick.

They are not too bad on genuine errors but do keep a record of everything you send in and send it recorded. Remember to keep the recorded slip too.

Only thing is you don't know when the SORN ran out? The SORN it was under may have finished the day after it was sold for instance?? SORN only lasts 12 months.

You should be fine, send in a copy of the advert too as this will amplify your genuine error.

Hope you get it sorted and it doesn't cost you excess money/fine.

No SORN print out was provided in the history file and the seller never made mention of the expiry date. Stupid rookie error!

Hopefully that may well help.

Thanks

Ken

Sorry to tell you but the SORN stops when you buy (sell) a car -
https://www.gov.uk/register-sorn-sta...d-notification

It does seem daft as the tax is transferable, but I suppose it's all part of the scheme to try to keep unlicensed/unMOTed cars and drivers off the road, trouble is that people who try to comply by MOTing and taxing a car as you have done then get caught out by the paperwork while the dodgy characters just totally ignore the whole thing.

Hi K.
ignore the idiots. I get a lot of 'fines' including ones for cars that I have the 'thank you for informing us that you have sold/ scrapped the car' type letters for, some three years later.
Every now and then I get a letter form an 'enforcement' agency asking me for £80, if I don't pay they will reprocess my garden shed, cancel my subscription to wool knitters weekly and inform credit reference agencies.
I gave up phoning the DVLA after the first few attempts as they say the computer is never wrong even though I was keep a copy of all V5's sent to them with the new keepers details.
