I may have been misleading folk with my post - I was referring to the prop shaft ujs. I have never had to look at the steering one - it's original and never had any attention. It may have a similar plug, but I have never had to look!!

Mmmm ... Had one go bad once on a high mileage 744. Steering rough as (insert analogy of choice) and felt like it was on a chain and sprocket not rack and pinion. MOT man didn't like it either! Fortunately replacements were readily available, cheap and easy to fit.

I've got some new UJ's and they came with zerk fittings all ready to go. Don't recall factory fit UJ's having this.

No,they didn't,Mertz.The lower steering u/j is no longer available,but the universal joint itself could be replaceable?

The bearings in the UJ are sealed to prevent water ingress so you wont get any oil in.. the HEAT dries them out however.. If you want to prolong it's life make up a heat shield...

I understood that in 1992 Volvo changed the U-joint design. Apperantly only pre-1992 are still available, but post-1991 ones are NLA.
