Default Replace sump on 940 2.4 TD

Dealer managed to strip thread on drain plug hole. They advised that new sumps no longer available so their solution was to replace parallel thread plug with a tapered thread plug - but it still drips a bit and wife is objecting to oil stains on driveway.

Options:
1) Ignore it
2) Get a replacement sump from a breaker and fit it (but it looks like a big job?)
3) Other ideas?

try some ptfe tape on the tapered plug, get it from homebase or any good diy shop.

If the dealers admitted stripping it and their fix didn't work I would go back and get them to sort it out ! Quite how they managed to strip the thread is a worry though.
It might be that they were just unlucky and it had already been damaged.

It might be worth checking to see if the sumps are available in case they just didn't want to fit it (try another dealers) otherwise it will be a case of either you or them getting a replacement one or repairing the original.
An engineering company might be able to tap a slightly larger thread and fit a larger plug or fit a thread repair insert called a Helicoil.

To be fair, it is a fairly big job to change the sump, involving a strong engine crane for a start!

Personally, I don't see how they managed to damage it, because they are STRONG!!

I'd be inclined to agree with the advice already given, try the dealer who did the work first, who will no doubt deny responsibility...

Or try and find someone to re tap the sump, but they'd have to be careful as it's alloy! :S

Default Sump....... :-(

Yes the sump is a pig to change, as above a good crane is needed and the sub frame get in the way even when the engine is lifted! I will be replacing the sump gasket on mine tomorrow. Try the PTFE tape, you can get some ptfe tape for natural gas lines - it is thicker and just might make the difference. Good luck.
