855 v70 spoiler mounting question
How can I mount my spoiler on to my volvo 850 estate?
I don't have the brackets and I really don't want to buy them from anyone at silly prices What sort of glue would be best? I've got some 3m vhb double sided tape but I don't know if this will strong enough. Severe bodging is more the welcome. |

Couldn't you get a piece[or two] of scrap steel cut them to size and bend to shape[not a complicated design I don't think from memory of last time I noticed them on my V70] Other than that I had good results with Tiger Seal when I stuck a rear spoiler on the bootlid of a Vauxhall Omega I owned some years ago.

I believe Sikaflex is also a very good product to use in such applications.

If fitting a genuine 850 spoiler there are no points of contact that would allow adhesives to adhere safely to the tailgate. Buy or make some proper brackets and secure it properly. You don't want it flying off at 70mph on a motorway

The spoiler itself doesn't actually fit on to the tailgate, it fits on by the brackets so you will need these to mount it properly.
The brackets also make sure it's in the right place so the tailgate can open fully. Trouble is...you'll probably have a hard job finding the brackets on their own, probably not held by main dealers now but possibly Skandix? There are a couple of spoilers on ebay...

As previously mentioned avoid the adhesive method:~
You can do better- in another post a member has asked a similar question to include pictures of the brackets. I also sent in this recommendation: the brackets do look to be a simple DIY engineering job, make them up in stainless steel with stainless screws- nuts/bolts. You can purchase small sheets of s/s on ebay if you don't have a local outlet. Done properly you can end up with a better than original items with just a little application. Hope it helps. Bob. |

Personally I'd be strongly against just gluing it on, no matter how good the glue is. Most adhesives degrade over time, and there's a fair bit of force on the spoiler at speed, and if it flew off and went through the windscreen of a following car and killed or injured someone, there'd be an awful lot of paperwork....
As above, I'd either obtain the proper brackets somehow (you might find they're actually not that expensive from Volvo?? Try FRF) or make some, ideally out of stainless steel, and copy the original fitment method. You can supplement it with glue of you like, but a proper mechanical fixing is always going to be more reliable and above all, safe. Edit - if you make some, using decent thick guage aluminium would work well too, and it's nice and easy to work with and won't corrode.

Or this
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284650594...mis&media=COPY Then sell the spoiler. Gluing seems a bit criminal if you like the car |
