Default Exhaust knocking

I am experiencing a knocking sound when I have passengers in the back seat.

I located the noise as coming from the exhaust knocking against the rear axel. I will upload a photo when I get a chance.

Has anyone experienced this and does it require new rear suspension or do i need to adjust the exhaust hangers?

Any help would be much appreciated

If the axle manages to touch the exhaust it's generally the exhaust that needs to give way!

Check the pair of hangers ahead of the axle - maybe weak or one missing? Then, assuming the exhaust is sound and not distorted due to damage/corrosion, it needs re-hanging - the joints must be loosened and the section over the rear axle jiggled to a position where it clears everything.

It could be something as simple as one of the rubber hangers coming loose or falling off. Have a good luck underneath and give the exhaust a shake and see what it tells you.

The figure of 8 type rubber hangers can be tightened by putting a ratchet cable tie round their middle. One of the hangers, forward of the rear axle IIRC, controls sideways movement, and in my limited experience this seems to be the source of knocking problems.

Thanks for all the help. On closer inspection all of the rubber hangers are there and seem to be in good condition. I have noticed that it seems to be more of a horizontal issue than a vertical one. I don't remember hearing the noise when I bought the car. Is it possible that I have reversed into something and bent the exhaust? I would think that this would be evident from a stretching of the rubber.

If you can loosen the joint between the main box and the rear section, you might get more clearance by twisting the rear part a bit. There isn't much room to spare in the over axle space so you need to get it just right. Of course if you don't carry anyone in the back and/or fill the boot with heavy stuff it's not so critical.

I agree with Derek. My exhaust was knocking and was solved by twisting/rotating the back box to a slightly different horizontal position.
