PASS!!!!
One advisory - rear brake pads wearing thin. We'll get that sorted asap. Thank you all so much. You're not just helping us sort the car, you're helping me help my lad to learn about all this stuff. Priceless. |

Pads should be readily available at your local motor factor, ECP or any of the other usual suspects including Rock Auto - i bought a set of pads for something silly like £1.24 for mine recently, i was buying some other stuff at the same time and the pads didn't increasse the S&H costs much so it was all a bargain. I think the 240 uses the same rear pads as mine - almost a generic part for many RWD Volvos in fact. If so, they're more or less square in shape and surprisingly small. Double-check this by looking at your old ones before ordering though! Ideally you'll also need some DOT4 brake fluid and a one-way bleed valve to do the pad swap plus wire brushes and one or two files plus a G-clamp and a long screwdriver or similar. I'll explain all once you've got the pads and are ready to do the job.

Would this one do the job, Dave?
https://www.amazon.co.uk/CESHUMD-Ble...1&rps=1&sr=8-2 Can't find brake pads at that kind of price but just over £10 seems to be possible. Though we need to establish which calipers we have first... Last edited by Chris152; Mar 26th, 2021 at 17:26. |

I was lucky with those pads from Rock Auto, was also buying some flexi hoses and a couple of other bits at the same time and the whole lot came to about a tenner plus S&H, normal price is about a tenner for rear pads.

These are quite straight forward & not overpriced:~
On my '88 240 the bleed sequence requires two nipples to be opened at the same time so a couple had been used- could be worth checking your cars requirement incase you need the same. The push on fitting to hold the hose to the nipple can sometimes be a little awkward but a small cable tie works ok. Regards Bob Link:~ https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VIZIBLEED...oAAOxyuR5TY3rk |

The rear calipers should only have one nipple each and opened one at a time unless there's something i've missed somewhere?

The safest way of pushing the pistons back into the calipers is with something like this:
https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/cht2...ston-spreader/ It lets you apply pressure to both sides of the caliper simultaneously and won't leave you nursing a scar from the screwdriver/used brake pad combination that is sometimes suggested for the job. I've got one and it's worth its weight in chocolate (and I'm a serious choc-oholic). It's also easier to use than the G-cramp that LS mentioned. The only calipers it won't work on is the wind-back type, but no rear-wheel drive Volvo has them fitted anyway.

I suggested the G-Clamp as it can be used for a variety of other tasks as well, rather than the dedicated pad spreader tool.

Absolutely... it is a good idea to have a couple of G clamps in different sizes in the garage anyway. The wind back tool is useful for lots of other jobs also - and none of these tools are expensive.
