Need advice on XC60 Used Purchase D4 vs D5
Hi, I'm in the market for a second hand XC60 and am not sure what is the best option to buy - 2 models seem to be the best for our needs; a 2015 Volvo XC60 SE Nav 2.4 D4 AWD Manual 190bhp or a 2015 Volvo XC60 SE Lux AWD 2.4 220bhp which appears to be a D5 and geartronic. The car will be used for a lot of long motorway journeys and fuel efficiency is therefore important, but also reliability is a key concern. AWD is really important as we live in a rural area prone to adverse weather and awful roads. Engine noise in the cabin in the cabin is something that is important (or rather the lack of!) and I've read some reviews which say the D5 is more noisy. I would appreciate any advice on which is the better engine and help on whether geatronic is better than manual - I generally have preferred manual over auto's but the other half prefers auto having driven only auto since she passed her test - I think a bit of manual driving could do her good - though I can't say she agrees! Thanks for any advice you may have!

I would say... a fairly common question...
Being that you want AWD, currently, both those engines you've listed are essentially the same..literally. The d4 is pretty much a detuned version of the d5.. If mpg is a priority then I would guess the manual will always win this battle...although my vote would be d5 auto!!!! Compared to more modern engines, yes I agree it's not as refined, but equally it makes a bloody nice noise so it's not unpleasant, but it's a far from noisy cabin at cruise...very smooth and quiet I would say. Lovely place to be. Last edited by GusGecko; Nov 11th, 2016 at 21:04. |

The 2 engines are essentially the same but with different outputs.
My choice would be the d5 with auto, this car is built for an auto and with the d5 it is superb. There is almost no difference between the 2 as fat as mpg goes, in fact the official figures used to be exactly the same! Try them both, I am sure you will choose the d5 auto.

try 'em both, I did.
I expect the Se Lux would win my test with its extra bits and possibly better seats imo., Auto every time on a Volvo and the D5 just makes it sound extra special. You can Polestar them both for even more umph!.. |

If you have owned a BMW, merc or Audi/vag auto in the last 10 years, you won't be impressed with the auto. It's sluggish and thirsty.

We have owned BMW, VW and Audi cars all auto and now I have Volvo auto and I'm impressed with it. You can't tar everyone with the same brush!

I have the R design Lux D4 (5 Cyl) with auto.
Excellent setup. If you want to floor it, put it into sport and it goes like stink. Quiet on motorways, overall I never see what people complain that the engine is noisy. I don't find that. I went for the R design as the seats were more comfortable than the SE lux in my personal opinion. Loving that heated everything that comes on auto when tep drops below 9 degrees.

There have been views on the Forum that the D4 AWD Auto is 'relatively' slow - and indeed if you check the figures, it is the slowest in the stable. Polestar is the remedy for this. You just have to drive a D4 and a D5 back to back and I am sure you will notice the difference.

I guess the crux for the OP is...do you want a manual or auto? The less power 'could' be cured by a remap on the d4 if that was an issue
As standard though the Lux model will have more options than an SE too |
