140/164 ignition lock

I went to move my 142 today but the key will not turn in the ignition. After a little WD40 thinking it may just be stuck with sitting over the winter still no joy. I then went to my 164 and have exactly the same problem. Both cars are garaged and I've never had this problem before. Both cars are 1971 and have the same ignition lock. I took the plastic off around the lock on the 142 but its fitted with sheer bolts so no way in really. I've left them soaking for today and will try again tomorrow. Has anybody else had this problem? I presume the pin that locks the steering wheel must be stuck. Is there anyway of getting inside the lock or is it just a case of replacing the whole lock?

They have concocted a plot between themselves over Christmas; keep on trying and waggling the wheel about whilst pressing on the key (careful not too hard!)- or take the wheel off, whip out the top bearing and take the top half of the column out. You can usually detach the UJ at the bottom to do this. Cleaning and plenty of new grease MAY do the trick. I've done this to good effect on other cars but as yet not the Volvo. Whilst you're there you may want to pop a new top bearing in if you have any play in the steering wheel.

Have you accidentally swapped over the keys? Strange for both to get the same fault at the same time!

The shear bolts often undo with some gentle tapping round using a centre punch. I've had several that undid themselves over time. Replace with an allen headed bolt if possible.
My LHD 144 did the lock trick once. Was OK after about 10 mins of fiddling. WD40ed it and have not had a repeat.

Hi. Before undoing anything, hold the steering in a position such that there is no pressure on the lock, wiggle the key up and down a couple of time whilst turn as well, it will give. Trust me.
