Burned oil, whatever that is exactly because burned oil is a solid residue, does not itself denote a dead transmission.

Thake it to a marque specialist, or an autobox specialist. Your friend who just happens to run a garage is liable to be neither.

I am seriously considering a repair now.

The car has an interesting history, it was a company car before I purchased it. During its life, it lost a coolant hose and the driver drove it to destruction. Not sure if it was a lease vehicle.

Anyhow, Volvo rebuilt the engine, lots on new bits heads etc I have the documentation that proves it was rebuilt by Volvo so, in reality, the engine has perhaps 40,000 miles.

Parents had similar issue with their XC60 T6. New haldex pump (get a 2nd hand one if needs be) and oil changes sorted it.

If you have the Gen5 haldex, you pull the pump off to change the oil. Very easy and a quick.

I'd be inclined to change the Transmission fluid too. Again not necessarily expensive. I used oil specific for the gearbox and cost 60 quid for 10 litres. Three flushes and a level check, it was changed.

Gen5 has the filter attached to the pump. Quick and easy to clean. I think previous versions have a separate filter in the unit.

Surely worth an some oil changes as opposed to a bin....

Mines a Gen 5 unit.
I watched a you tube video.
Spent £15 on special oil and 2 new o rings off the net and a can of brake cleaner to clean the gauze on the pump.
Tools required are a 10mm socket and a large flat blade screwdriver to remove oil filler plug.
Took me 1 hour.
If I can all can do this service job most can.
Give it a go before spending ££££

Where is the car based and maybe someone can recommend a garage?

Another idea, might a brake caliper be jamming on a little from time to time causing the dragging feeling? When a rear caliper failed on my BMW I had the dragging feeling and a slight vibration plus a hot wheel.

Ok guys apologies for the late update.

Anyhow, I took it to a gearbox specialist, he was quite helpful.
He told me clunky gear changes and burnt oil and usually the symptoms of a defective valve chest or the hydraulic control system.

Slipping transmissions can be fixed by a simple flush and oil change in 90% of cases.

So, she went into surgery and they removed the old valve chest, but problems, he detected small traces of water and signs of rust on the old valve chest.
It seems the cooling radiator inside the gearbox is leaking so a new radiator is on order. Without pulling the gearbox he has no idea if there is any water damage. However, he has driven it and there are no error codes so he suspects I may be ok.

Just spotted on the Valve chest it says FoMoCo, Ford I thought the box was made in Japan.

Aisin AW supplies automatic transmissions to 55 automotive manufacturers around the world, virtually every major OEM. These include General Motors, Ford, Jeep, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Saab, VW, Volvo, Hyundai, MINI among others.

The Freelander 2 - on which the XC60 drivetrain is based - has the same transmission. Both brands were owned by Ford at the time, explaining the FoMoCo.
