Default XC90 Water in footwell

Hi Everyone,

First post on here and asking for help/advice I'm afraid.

I have a 2005 Volvo XC90 and have water leaking primarily into passenger footwell. I have stripped all carpets and such and found the sunroof drains leaking. I have fixed both of these with new longer pipe lengths and these do not leak anymore. I have checked the heater air intake under windscreen valance and this all appears fine - block the two drains and filled the bulkhead with water to see if there was a leak into the heater air intake - there isn't a leak.

Heavy heavy rain yesterday and lots of standing water and there is still water coming in under the heater matrix/bulkhead area?

Any ideas where this could be from? Are there any plugged holes in the bulkhead? How to access these?

There is the fixed rubber fronted/foam backed sound proofing which looks very difficult to remove

Next I might remove front wheels and wheel arch trims to see if there are any perished grommets or bungs?

Any advice and suggestions?

Many Thanks for any help

Remove the passenger door panel.

Check the plastic waterproof sheet is properly sealed all around the perimeter, and especially on the bottom. There should be no breaks in the seal.

Water can run down the window, into the door, down the plastic seal, and then through gaps into the car.
The plastic sheet is very important for weathertightness.

I've had it happen, and by replacing the rubber goo used to hold the plastic sheet down I fixed the problem.

There is no sheet on the xc90 but th re are individual hole covers. On mine when I had this problem one of the scuttle drains, where it passes in to the wheel well had come adrift so it was going straight into the foot well.

Have you cut the sunroof drain grommet, as well as fixing longer pipes? I have never heard of longer pipes fixing the issue, but you do need to cut the end off the rubber grommet to ensure water drains freely.

Hopefully all sorted, silicone sealed around the heater matrix air intake as water WAS getting in there, also sorted the air con drain/grommet so it seals better.

Longer pipes from sunroof drain poke right through the grommet and run inside the 'A' pillar bulk head so the grommet is just a grommet to protect the pipe - the pipe finishes much lower down so even if the grommet perishes the drain will still work and there is no narrowing at the grommet anymore.

Many Thanks
