Default Volvo 340 1.7 GLE Short Shifter

Hi all,

I am a new member to this forum and had a quick question for you if thats ok! =]
In my new Volvo i have a massive, and i mean easily 6 inches worth of throw from [for example] 3rd to 4th.

I was thinking about a short shifter.

Has anyone made one up themselves for this car or is there a kit you can buy for a 340 as i cant seem to find one anywhere due to the transaxle gearbox.

I was thinking i could cut and weld the ball on the gearstick to be higher up therefore making less throw inside the car and more throw externally but i then thought it might not work with the gearbox and bellhousing.

The other thought i had is where the rod joins onto the base of the gearstick and goes towards the gearbox and also towards the bellhousing, could i just add for example 1 inch of bar so it would take less throw to get it into gears.

Any thoughts or Help / Suggestions would be greatfully appricatied.

Kind Regards

Theo =]

I think that sort of quirk is part of the charm of older cars.
Given the gearbox is beneath the back seat, the linkages are long and so is the gearstick movement.
Live with it !

I didn't think of it being long, but now that I compare it to other cars it is quite long.
Personally I like it, I think it just suits the driving style of the 300 series.

It is long, 1st to 2nd isn't far different than Manchester to Devon! It is possible, yes by moving the ball up the lever, though I've mainly seen it done with the 360 linkage. I've a feeling when V3M is back up someone has done a 340 version (maybe 340GLT a long time ago).

The saving grace is how positive the linkage is given the distance, that has always surprised me.
