re: 340 1.4 Auto fuel consumption?
Hi,
I've had my 340 for about a year now (B reg) - 78k and still going strong. However in that time the fuel consumption hasn't really varied and I'm only getting about 28 mpg yet the handbook quotes and amazing 42 mpg or something at 56 mph. I know I shouldn't beleive that but it seems a big difference from what I get. Plugs are a textbook chestnut colour and never had a problem with emission tests for MOT. Can any other 340 1.4 Auto owners out there let me know what milage they get? Cheers Gary |

RE: re: 340 1.4 Auto fuel consumption?
I don't own an auto myself, but I remember speaking to George Dickinson, the club authority on CVT 300's, he's an expert you know!! He said you should be getting around 35mpg at least. I would suspect that the carb is either slightly maladjusted or slightly worn. Check the float height, I generally use a twist drill to measure the gap because you can never judge easily otherwise. Can't remember the dimension but its in Haynes. If in doubt go for a slightly larger gap rather than smaller. Also, the jets get larger with age and this can increase the fuel consumption. If its OK for the MOT I would leave it, but checking the float height doesn't cost anything. Also, make sure the choke is off properly and the lid is screwed properly after checking the float height. Check the air jets as they can work loose as well.
If not then a recon carb would be the answer. Andy |
