Worth it for the virgos & leather furniture alone.
Drop a 1UZ-FE and A340 gearbox in it, fit the shifter from and AW equipped 240 and you've got a 250bhp V8 sleeper.

Or stick in a 289 Ford and make it a Moosetang!

Now there's a thought Bob! Part of the reason i suggested the Lexus engine/box combo is the box is near identical to the OE AW71 so the original gearbox mounts can be used, bit of faffing with the extension housing to change the speedo drive and output shaft to the Volvo version but nothing much.

Then there is a kit available for the engine mounting, i don't think anybody has done that for the Mustang lump although the 5.0 Coyote would be a good option......

Alternatively, if you want to stick with the Ford bits, find an S Type in a scrapyard and either drop in the engine/box from a 3.0 V6 or the V8 in either 4.0 n/asp or 4.2 supercharged guise - probably nearly as powerful as the Mustang lump, the 3.0 V6 is 240bhp so close to the Lexus 1UZ.

Others wold probably say a red block turbo seeing as it's a rolling Volvo shell but if you're going to fit another engine, half the work is already done, the car will never be original so turn it into a real sleeper!

The Muricans have fitted all sorts of engines to these, 2JZ, 5.0 V8, LS7 etc and the Australians too as they have an abundance of donors in the form of Holden's. I've just seen a video of someone who fitted a 2.3 16V Mazda engine in one, the massive engine bay in old Volvo's is a modders delight.

You know me I'd go for a B230 squirter block with a big holset or borg Warner turbo.

Do you remember that AW71 gearbox I bought for the RB that came with a free B230 motor attached (that I sold)? Well, this is the donor motorcar. The owner had a plan to fit a Lexus V8 (if I recall), but I'm guessing that never came to fruition.

I know you chaps were indulging in a flight of fancy, but these projects all start off being fanciful dreams and hardly ever get completed (maybe one in 20). Even if they do get finished one ends up with a load of 30 year old bits that never quite work properly together (2 years and 20 grand later).

The best place for this motor car is to be broken for the wheels and interior (both of which were okay, but far from good and have been standing in a garden in Lincolnshire for another 18 months since I saw them) plus any other low hanging fruit, then weighed in for the scrap. Just as BB suggested.

The electrical problem would not take long to fix, and I think Dave is right that the flat paint would respond well to being cut and polished; the brightwork would probably come up okay as well and the wheels need a repaint (but they are steel, so easy to do oneself). It could be made nice for a grand in repairs and recommissioning (but I disagree with the seller that it is a potential show winner; well, anything could be a potential show winner if it had enough money spent on it, but it wouldn't be worth investing so much in this cooking apple).

I'd say it would be a good buy at £2,000 to £3,000 then worth 5 grand with the faults fixed, the recommissioning work done, polished up and with the historic vehicle premium. One wouldn't make a fortune but there might be a grand or so profit if someone was interested in doing the work themselves.

I like this motor car and would probably buy it if I was already settled in Zummrezette.

I'm a little surprised this one hasn't had much interest (the auction ends this eve). So far it had received just one bid at the opening price (£1,750) - maybe that was the seller to get things moving as there is a reserve to be met and so no chance of selling it to him/herself?

Maybe there will be a flurry of bids at the last minute?

There hasn’t been much interest in this auction so far, there is a day to go and bidding is still only at £1,550. There may be a flurry of late bids of course, but I suspect this one will confirm my thesis that performance modifications only ever reduce the value of classic motor cars.

I can’t help thinking this one would be a good motorcar for Steve instead of a 145 VWW if the price was right (maybe £2,500 to £3,500). It wouldn’t take long to get rid of the daft lowering springs, and the Weber conversion could perhaps stay as a reliability enhancement

That thing could be as rotten as a pear in a year or so.

Barge pole motor, fortune spent everywhere but where necessary.

I wouldn’t have thought the mileage was plausible, and probably isn’t corroborated in any meaningful way. There is a bit or rust in the bottom of the doors and the rear wheel arches look a bit crusty (maybe need a little weld or two), but I like it. I think the price is just about right, what a nice motor car (not for me though, there is nothing much to do to it).

Afternote: the wheels are a bit gauche on a DL.
