Default Air conditioning not working after battery change

I had to change the battery on a 2009 xc70 last week, I had been given some vague information about maintains the electrical connection but I was unhappy working with live power whilst trying to remove the battery in a tight space, so I did not do this.
After reconnecting the new battery car started and radio worked (no code required). Later I discovered that the A/C did not function. I understand from others that this might require a reset of the ECU. The methods described for the reset include disconnection of the negative terminal leaving 15 mins plus possibly touching brake peddle a few times. Reconnection should have the ignition key in position II. My car has an electronic key and it presume that position II is with the key fob in the socket with dash lights on but engine off. Do I need to do this before the battery is disconnected or after the disconnection.?
Thanks
