Default D5 Turbo Whistle...

Hey guys,

A few questions are slowly emerging as I'm driving a lot more compared to before. My D5 (205 hp, twin turbo) seems to like to whistle a lot. At least that is what I would call it.

You can hear it nearly all the time. Boost seems good, no leaks or so, at least at idle. Is that normal?

I mean, a bit of whistle seems normal for a diesel, but I'm not sure if that is too much. My former experiences with turbos were/are a 1.4l Multiair from Fiat as well as a 1.0l Firefly, also from Fiat. Both petrol and both barely whistled...

Cheers

Damien

A slight hiss would be normal. If its excessive like gushing air, that's not. A very common issue that can cause a hissing sound is the turbo resonator seals. Underneath the car, there's a pipe that goes to the turbo and the seals can let air pass, as the seal perishes with age.

A clip of the sound it makes might be helpful. Granted, that won't be easy, but its hard to say without listening to it.

A clip would be really hard to make, as I can't pick up the noise... I was considering replacing all the intake piping, as it is all now 14 years old, so it is worth doing - even though the whistle noise is nice

Maybe a smoke test might highlight any possible air leak/s ?

I unfortunatley don't have the tool to do that. But I could possibly just pressurise the system... That might just do the job too...
