My car's an '88 B200E auto.

The car has crank pulley held in place by single large nut. Haynes' says to remove the starter motor to jam the crank to get this undone/tightened back up.

Skandix tells me this will fit my car but I'm at a loss to see where it goes or how it works.

Can anyone enlighten me please?

It slots into the bottom pully without blocking the nut. This locks the engine in position while you undo the crank nut.

Given the tightening pressure of 60lb/ft (if the last one to replace it didn't go for 120!) this is either a two mad job or the hole in the handle is mean to be bolted to something; the steering pump fixing bracket hole?

Hi Julian,

Yes I have the tool it works exactly as per the photograph in that link you have posted. And it makes the crankshaft pulley bolt a slice of gateau to undo.

With that proper tool deployed, all you need is a long handle to turn a socket on the pulley bolt. I'm small and not young and I used a 600mm handle and got a counter grip with my the hand on the thermostat housing.

I would use the very longest handle you can, acquire. Remember, the bolt might have been overtightened and/or refitted using Loctite. And as for the torque setting, remember that is plus some degrees of rotation. So all in combined the bolt might be very TIGHT.

3/4" drive 1 metre handles don't cost much on eBay. And 1/2" drive 750mm handles can be got even cheaper. And then again there's an old trick of using a piece of pipe over the handle to get more leverage, but that invalidates any guarantee, and for safety be sure the pipe has no chance of slipping off the handle.

Do check the current price of the tool from a Volvo dealer and possibly haggle. As I reported earlier:

I would gladly lend mine to you but it's a very long way from you to me. And the return postage would buy you a tool to keep.

Experienced people say in the forum that an impact driver is a good alternative. But someone posted saying their impact driver only just managed to do the job ...

Good luck.
